SPACE for Parents of Adult Children with Failure to Launch
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) was originally developed as a parent-based treatment for children and adolescents with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It has since been adapted to help families navigate Failure to Launch (FTL)—a term used to describe the challenges some capable emerging adults face in transitioning to independent adulthood.
Failure to Launch is not a mental health diagnosis. Rather, it refers to persistent difficulty taking on age-appropriate adult responsibilities, such as obtaining or maintaining employment, pursuing education or vocational training, managing finances, or living independently. Many individuals experiencing FTL also struggle with anxiety, OCD, depression, disrupted sleep, social withdrawal, loneliness, and/or excessive use of electronic devices.
SPACE-FTL provides parents with a structured approach to supporting their adult child's movement toward greater independence. Sessions are designed for parents, and adult children typically do not attend. However, if an adult child wishes to participate in their own individual therapy alongside their parents' SPACE-FTL work, this is encouraged.
Parents participating in SPACE-FTL will focus on the following goals:
Increase Supportive Responses
Parents learn to respond with empathy while communicating confidence in their adult child's ability to cope with challenges, tolerate discomfort, and develop greater independence.
Reduce Accommodating Behaviors
Parents systematically identify accommodations that unintentionally reinforce avoidance or dependence and develop a gradual, thoughtful plan to reduce these accommodations while maintaining a supportive relationship.
Increase Age-Appropriate Expectations
Parents establish clear, realistic expectations that encourage their adult child to take manageable steps toward employment, education, financial responsibility, and other markers of adult functioning.
Reduce Isolation and Build a Supportive Network
Supporting an adult child with FTL can be emotionally taxing and isolating. SPACE-FTL recognizes that meaningful change is easier with support. Parents learn how to engage extended family members, friends, and other supportive individuals to reinforce independence, encourage progress, and celebrate incremental successes.
